about

A new collaboration between two hugely talented Bulgarian artists Boyan & Ruth Koléva. the ‘Wake Up’ EP showcases 4
unique cuts of sublime electronic soul.

Award winning songwriter and jazz/soul singer Ruth Koléva has reached the status of ’national treasure’ in her native Bulgaria,
while her international profile has been building fast since the release of her award winning 2014 debut album ‘RUTH’. Koléva’s music has been described as “amazing” by Mark Ronson, as well as being reworked by
the likes of Opolopo, Mark de Clive-Lowe and BBE stalwart DJ Spinna. 25 year old hotshot instrumentalist and beatmaker Boyan has released on labels Darker Than Wax and Mellow Orange, displaying an prodigiously melodic, polished production style.

Boyan supplies a backdrop of smooth, headnodding soul with lush, full instrumentation throughout ‘Wake Up’. Jazz and gospel influences abound within the chord structures, while heavy drums and bubbling
basslines provide a fair amount of bounce to the ounce. Ruth’s clear vocal tone and soaring harmonies mesh perfectly with Boyan’s music, while her lyrics explore universally relevant themes. “I wrote the
songs about love experiences, and also one of the songs is about humanity. We seem to be missing that lately.” The EP is titled
“Wake Up” after the final song, which Ruth sums up with a question: “Why are we separating our only true kind? Humans. Fellow people. I don’t understand.”

'Wouldn't it be fun,' they mused, 'To release some of these tunes?' And so BBE (Barely Breaking Even) was born. ... more
